Pitcairnia cf riparia

Out of Stock

This is a species Pitcairnia that was collected in Ecuador by Jerry Raack.  At this time we still do not have a positive identification for this plant, but we do believe that it could be Pitcairnia riparia.  Thus, for the interim we are calling it Pit. cf. riparia.  the plant is very much a rambling species with offsets produced on long stolons which could be up to a foot long.  the leaves are short and fairly narrow, about a foot and the inflorescence is about as long as the leaves; a scape with dark pinkish-red flowers.  Comparing this plant with photos of Pit. riparia that we have found, ours seems to have more flowers in a more compact ‘head’ than the ones in the photos that we have seen.  We will continue to seek a positive identification.  Grow this plant in shade to bright shade and keep moist.  Works well in a hanging pot or basket.
