Ledebouria socialis

$5.00 Out of Stock

A short fat green above ground bulb, long green leaves with darker green spots. Bulbs have a glossy surface clothed in peeling, papery tunics that prevent water loss. Ledebouria is a genus of deciduous or weakly evergreen bulbs in the http://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbswiki/index.php/Hyacinthaceae .  It is only recently established as a genus apart from Scilla which is a genus of the Northern Hemisphere. Ledebouria is found in India, Madagascar, and Africa (mostly southern Africa). It is found mostly in areas of summer rainfall in subtropical savannas and grasslands in the eastern and northeastern parts of southern Africa. There are a few species found in winter rainfall areas as well.  This is a complex of fascinating little bulbous plants suited to dry shaded conditions, it can stand severe neglect and still reward you with showy foliage and blooms. There are more of these little plants around than there are names to go with them, and many variations (and perhaps species) exist in cultivation. Unfortunately, many are unidentified.
