An endemic species to the montane forests of Western Ecuador in the Amazon drainage of the Andes. Growing only in primary, undisturbed forest, this species is absent from regrowth forests for some reason. It lives in a region of high humidity and moisture. A funnelform rosette with 2.5 inch wide leaves that are green on top and violet-brownish-red below. The inflorescence is nodding, with pinkish-red bracts and multiple branches with flowers distichously arranged. The flowers are yellow with white tips. This species was described by Harry Luther in 1998.
