Beautiful Vriesea ‘Hawaiian Hybrids’. These stunning plants are complex hybrids of Red Chestnut, hieroglyphica, fenestralis and others and are fairly unique, each a little different. They typically reach about 30in across under average growing conditions and may eventually require a 10in pot to reach full size potential. All are now 15 to 24in across in 6in pots, some with offsets. We are making this offer in a unique way; All seven different clones are $50 each, first come-first-served, BUT we are offering a variation. You can bid higher on a one time basis to insure that you will get the plant you want. The bids will be sealed and the high bidder gets the plant. If you do not wish to bid higher, you can take a chance at the base rate of $50. You can also select the clone or clones that you want or take ‘any available’.
Choice Rare Platyceriums
Platycerium holtumii A Thai species similar in appearance to P. wandae, with erect, crown-like sterile fronds and pendulous, broad, antler-like, short, scurfy fertile fronds. Likes warm conditions and to dry well between watering. Not a ‘best choice’ for beginners but easier than ridleyi by several degrees. Young plants, mostly 10 to 16in tall, in very nice condition, mounted on wood slat mounting plaques, Medium plants, VIPP price, $55.00 #V6355 (regular price $75) Small plants, limited availability,
Platycerium ridleyi This interesting species is amongst the rarest in cultivation, partly at least due to the fact that it does not offset. The plants have very stiff, heavily contorted or grooved shield fronds that grow in a tight ball-like shape. The fertile fronds are erect and antler-like in form, giving real meaning to the nickname for the genus: staghorn fern. In nature this species is a myrmecophyte or ‘ant plant’, giving shelter to ant species that provide it with protection from all insect invaders. Consequently, this species must be protected from insect pests at all times, as it is a veritable ‘salad bar’ for any hungry cricket or cockroach that could easily destroy the meristem tip with a single bite. This species is of medium size; the ball it forms will rarely exceed the size of a basketball. Known to be a difficult species, it requires warmth in the winter and good air circulation. Not recommended for inexperienced growers. Three sizes available, imported about two months ago, all mounted on plaques.
Small size, only a few available
Medium size, best value, best availability
