Synandrospadix vermitoxicus One
truly bizarre aroid from Southern Peru and
Bolivia to Argentina. Somewhat resembling an
Alocasia, it is a self-heading rosette of shiny,
deep-green, sagittate leaves on thick petioles
that are light green with broken dark lines. The
inflorescence is interesting, a spathe with
light striping inside and out and a bristly,
corn cob shaped spadix of purple. A tuber
forming plant that goes dormant in winter. The
tubers are large and can reach almost five
pounds and the plants themselves about 3ft
across. The name means literally ‘worm killer’
and probably refers to use by indigenous peoples
to control intestinal parasites. Don’t try this
at home! Nice seedlings in 4in pots,
