Adenia venenata A caudex forming member of the Passion Flower family with a smooth skinned, green caudex and spinless, vine-like branches with leaves that are accompanied by thread-like tendrils. Our plants are about 8in tall in 3in pots, seed grown from our own stock.
#253S $7.50

Adenium obesum The Desert Rose of Africa. One of the most desirable of the caudiciform succulents. Noted for its thick and often contorted base, these plants also have beautiful trumpet-shaped blooms in shades of pink and red. Keep moist and well fed during the growing season (when plants are in leaf) and allow to dry well between watering when dormant. Trim longer stems to encourage branching and elevate the caudex when repotting to expose best characteristics. Ideal in a decorative container. Our plants are of outstanding character, with thick bases and  branches. 4in pots,

Beaucarnia goldmannii A fairly recent introduction to cultivation. From the dramatic marble canyons of central Honduras, these plants have conical trunks and grassy blue-green foliage and stay proportionately the same their entire life. In habitat, huge specimens over 20 feet tall with bases about six feet thick and many graceful branches must be hundreds of years old. Cultivate bright, moist in the growing season, drier in cool weather. Smaller plants, about 6in tall, in 4in pots, $10.00 #445S
Bursera species Oaxaca These are seedlings from our stock of plants originally collected in Mexico and as yet unidentified. Mature plants have miniature tree-like shapes with thick contorted branches and enormously thick but short trunks. Seedlings about 10 in tall in 4in pots,
$10.00 #2488
Ceiba species Oaxaca Collected by a seed hunter in Mexico who claims that it is an unidentified species with massive 4in spines! We have not seen a large plant, but I can attest that the seedlings, now over a foot tall, are viciously spiny. Ceiba are showy trees with pink to white flowers and a swollen trunk. Try one. 4in pots,
$10.00 #7206
Chorisia speciosa 'Silk Floss Tree' A beautiful flowering tree from South America that develops a bottle-shaped trunk, covered in large conical spines. Deciduous during the flowering season when it explodes with pink lily-like flowers in the fall of the year. Nice 24 to 30in tall plants in 4in pots,
$7.50 #841

(Note: If these grow much taller we may have to cut them back. They’ll still grow normally for you)
Fouquieria campanulata An Ocatillo relative native to Durango, Mexico. Slender, tapering branches bear stout spines and small leaves. Flowers are pink. Seed grown, 5in pots,
$15.00 #6156
Gyrocarpus jacquinii This is a caudiciform tree famous for its large seeds that whirl like the blades of a helicopter. The foliage is reminiscent of a grape leaf and the caudex is woody with smooth bark. Our plants are from  Burma. Average 3 to 4in caudex in a 6in pot.
$30.00 #3533
(A few larger available, inquire)
Operculicaria decaryi A caudex forming tree from Madagascar with a naturally gnarled trunk. Tiny bronzy-tinted dark green leaves, weeping branches, contorted growth and knobby bark make it interesting for bonsai. Grows to 18ft, but it will respond to smaller pot size and stay nice and compact. Excellent seed grown plants about
6 to 8in tall in 4in pots, $7.50 #650S
12 to 20in tall plants sent bare-root out of one gallon pots, only $17.50 #650
Pachypodium baronii v. baronii One of the jewels of the genus, a lovely caudiciform with brilliant red flowers. The plants may reach 3ft tall with many branches, but a much smaller size can be expected in pot culture. The stems are very spiny with conical spines on a brownish-green skin. Our clone has unusually wide leaves. The 2in flowers, borne in clusters, are bright red with somewhat ruffled petals. 4in tall seedlings in 3in pots,
$7.50 #985S

Pachypodium lamerei v. ramosum The choicest form of this Madagascan pachycaul that resembles a fat, silver cucumber with long pinkish spines and a crown of wide, upright, bright green leaves. This form has a branching habit, forming attractive specimens at a young age. Will grow to over 6ft tall with multiple trunks that can exceed 8in thick crowned with long, green leaves and white flowers. Makes a fabulous landscape specimen in frost free areas. We have beautiful, chubby, branching seedlings in 3.5in pots.
$7.50 #881S

Pseudobombax ellipticum A tree from southwestern Mexico is often a cliff dweller which forms a globose caudex from the size and shape of a cantaloupe to several feet across. The swollen trunk becomes marked with a tortoise-shell pattern in larger specimens, has green branches and large palmately-compound leaves, and shaving-brush like red or white flowers. Our plants are seed grown, about 10 to 12in tall, shipped bare-root out of gallon pots. To help the plant develop and retain a nice caudiciform shape, grow bright, and fertilize sparingly, trimming branches as needed.
$10.00 #757S

Collector’s Corner …

Erythrina species Thailand As yet an undescribed species. This cliff dweller forms a rounded caudex with a canopy of thorny branches. The caudex develops a ‘tortoise shell’ appearance with age. The thorny branches bear triangular leaves and red flowers. Likely this interesting plant would make a good bonsai subject. Our plants are healthy, rooted plants, ready to pot. They will be partially bare-rooted for shipping and this may cause some leaf drop but will cause no harm. We have several plants in roughly two sizes. The first size has about an egg to tennis ball-sized caudex and 30in or so of branches. $95.00 #6926M The second size is larger, with about a baseball sized caudex, $150.00 #6926 No two are really alike. Remember that these are new and probably have never before been imported. Plant in good draining soil, water well when in leaf and sparingly when dormant.
