Agave angustifolia var. marginanta A popular landscape species for warm temperate regions. Maturing at about 3ft, as a container plant may keep a much smaller profile. The strap-like leaves are about 2in wide or so, bluish green and variegated with creamy white margins. Nice plants about 10in tall, in 6in pots.

Alocasia aurora A new species reportedly from Bangkok. As Alocasias go this one is a beauty, with bright pink stems and heart-shaped leaves that emerge lime green then change to a darker tone. It has silver veining and a suckering habit that makes a very full plant in no time. Mature at about 30in.

Alocasia ‘Hilo High Color' A new cultivar that resembles the more familiar ’Hilo Beauty’ but has more intense coloration. A medium sized plant that more closely resembles a Caladium, and is suited best for light shade. Small plants do well in terrariums.

Alocasia lauterbaachiana This gem of a new species for collectors that comes from New Guinea is different than any other cultivated Alocasia. The leaves are lanceolate or sword shaped, scalloped on the margins and deep green with a bluish tint. It can reach 5ft tall and would make a spectacular landscape plant.

Alocasia macrorrhiza ‘Triangularis’ A bizarre cultivar with sharply triangular leaves held upright at the end of 3ft long petioles. The leaves are dark green with scalloped margins that curl inward. Does well as a bog plant or potted. Large liners, $4.00 #6610

Platycerium ridleyi This interesting S.E. Asian species is amongst the rarest in cultivation. The plants have very stiff, heavily contorted or grooved shield fronds that grow in a tight ball-like shape. The fertile fronds are erect and antler-like in form, giving real meaning to the nickname for the genus: staghorn fern. In nature this species is a myrmecophyte or ‘ant plant’, giving shelter to ant species that provide it with protection from all insect invaders. A medium sized species will rarely exceed the size of a basketball. It requires warmth in the winter and good air circulation.
