Myrmecophylla tibicinis A
handsome orchid with distinctive ‘cow horn’ shaped pseudobulbs, usually
shades of yellowish green to golden yellow in strong light. The name
‘tibicinis’ means literally ‘flute’, referring to the hollow stems. In
nature this species from Central America is a myrmecophyte or true ant
plant. Its hollow pseudobulbs have a narrow slit at the base to allow entry
of the very specialized ants which make only this orchid their home. Growing
high on exposed trunks, often palms, out of the nutrient rich forest canopy,
the ants are a welcome source of needed nitrogen and afford protection to
developing seed pods. In exchange the ants receive shelter and a specially
secreted nectar. The plants are rather handsome and produce large spikes
with many flowers. Sepals and petals are undulating, purple to bronzy, with
a white lip, veined with magenta and a yellow disc. Grow warm and bright. We
have mounted plants for
