Myrmecophylla tibicinis A handsome orchid with distinctive ‘cow horn’ shaped pseudobulbs, usually shades of yellowish green to golden yellow in strong light. The name ‘tibicinis’ means literally ‘flute’, referring to the hollow stems. In nature this species from Central America is a myrmecophyte or true ant plant. Its hollow pseudobulbs have a narrow slit at the base to allow entry of the very specialized ants which make only this orchid their home. Growing high on exposed trunks, often palms, out of the nutrient rich forest canopy, the ants are a welcome source of needed nitrogen and afford protection to developing seed pods. In exchange the ants receive shelter and a specially secreted nectar. The plants are rather handsome and produce large spikes with many flowers.
