Aechmea incompta
An unusual, newly described species related to Ae.
lingulata. A medium species 12 to 18in or so, with very stiff leaves
in an open rosette, green above and silver banded below. Spines are
fairly large and the leaf tip is black with a sharp terminal spine.

Aechmea kentii
A medium sized grower of especially fine merit from the
western Amazonian basin. A rosette of stiff, narrow leaves to 30in wide
blushes deep rose-red from the center out when in bloom. Its
inflorescence is cottony-white with blue flowers, nested in the center.

A miniature form of the species that
matures at only about 10in across or less! It forms a tight, flat

Aechmea tocantina
An interesting species from the Amazon basin where it
grows high in the forest canopy. Typical of many other Amazonian plants
it is excessively spiny, giving the leaves a scalloped appearance.
Grayish-brown, leathery leaves form an upright, tubular rosette, and
the inflorescence is a panicle of yellow and white. Seedlings in 4in

A really pretty, medium sized plant with
an upright tubular shape and leaves that curl downward at the tips.

Billbergia elegans
A beautiful species that came to us from Selby
Gardens (SEL 91-0490) has subtle pastel coloration. A smaller species to
about 18in tall with an upright, tubular shape. The leaves are stiff,
light green blushing orange in good light with an inflorescence bearing
peachy-orange bracts and blue tipped flowers. A very satisfying plant to

Billbergia horrida
The ‘straight’ species is interesting in spite of
having little color. The habit is a strictly upright tubular rosette,
with a large and typical 'thumbprint' in the lower side of each leaf.
Very large spines give it character and the inflorescence is erect, with

An interesting and obscure species with a more
open than tubular shape. Superficially it resembles the species B.
sanderiana. About 12in tall with leaves mottled with white or
