Araeococcus parviflorus A cute, miniature, ampoule-shaped species from the forests of Bahia, Brazil. Stoloniferous with green leaves and a panicle of tiny yellowish berries. Billbergia kuhlmannii A beautiful helicoid closely resembling brasiliensis, it is a tall grower to about 30in, grayish-green with silver cross-banding. The leaves are thick and succulent and the inflorescence is stunning, with large pink bracts, white ovaries and recoiling purple petals. Billbergia rosea This stunning species has deep chocolate-brown leaves with abundant silver banding. Formerly known as venezuelana, it is a giant that can reach 3ft tall in a tubular, vase-shape. Stout spines line the leaf margins. Canistrum montanum A relatively new species from Bahia, Brazil, is a stoloniferous, tubular rosette to about 12in, with very stiff, spiny leaves. Hohenbergia burle-marxii ‘Black Clone’ This large growing, wide-leaved species is light green with purplish spots. We brought back one plant from Brazil a few years ago that had very dark foliage, blotches of blackish-purple markings that nearly obscured the green. This plant flourished and we got a crop of seed from a selfing. Now the seedlings are about 16in across in 5in pots and are ready to move up. Still not showing mature coloration, they are just beginning to hint at blotching.
