Bulbophyllum biflorum This well-named plant produces twin flowers from multiple spikes on new growths. The inch-wide flowers are 4 to 5in long, white heavily streaked with red, and have a small, loosely rocking red-purple lip. The 6in tall plants have leathery leaves and grape-sized pseudobulbs. Medium light, frequent water, warm temps. Clumps in 4in pots.

Phalaenopsis mannii A medium-sized species that grows pendulous in dense humid forests at altitudes of 1500 to 4500ft, from the Indian Himalayas to Vietnam. Best grown on slabs in a shady area with high humidity. Distinctly drier winter helps initiate spring blooming. Fragrant, waxy 1½in blooms borne on an 18in raceme are star-shaped, yellow with mahogany blotching and a white lip with some pink spotting. Excellent young plants, about a year from blooming, are well established on treefern mounts.

Stanhopea wardii A beautiful Venezuelan form has 5in creamy yellow flowers with tiny reddish flecks on the sepals and petals, a large reddish ’eye spot’ on each side of the hypochile, and a strong spicy or chocolate fragrance. Psychopsis papilio The best known of the ’Butterfly Orchids’, this species has stunning flowers, bright yellow, with red mottling, and a large yellow disc on the ample lip.
