Aechmea abbreviata Endemic
to lowland Amazonian Ecuador, a small stoloniferous species that’s
uncommon but showy. Light green leaves in a 10in rosette and an
inflorescence with orange bracts and a tightly clustered head of white-lepidote
branches, pinkish sepals and yellow flowers make this a pretty species.
Various size offsets, |
||||
|
Aechmea calyculata ‘Alaya’
An interesting variegated form
of this nice small species. The plants flower with a cone or ‘corn cob’
shaped head of yellow flowers from a vase of upright leaves about 8 to
10in tall. As far as we are aware, this rarity is the only variegated
clone of this species. Multiples in 5in pots, |
||||
|
Aechmea chantinii 'Samurai'
A spectacular robust form of chantinii green with silver banding
and bold creamy white stripes up the center of each leaf. The
inflorescence has yellowish branches with bright orange-red bracts. Nice
near mature to mature plants in 6in pots, |
||||
|
Aechmea farinosa var.
discolor A real cute miniature.
A little plant, not much over 8in tall with a tubular vase-like
stoloniferous rosette. The leaves are deep green above and dark purple
below and recurve towards their tips. The inflorescence is a short scape
with a cluster of bright orange berries and blue flowers. 4in pots and
nice mature size offsets, |
||||
|
Aechmea organensis Nice

about 8in or so. The leaves are green with dark bases, tiny spines and the
spike is a delicate panicle of dark gray and blue. Small clumps in 4in
pots, |

Aechmea roeseliae A
rare species endemic to the lowlands of Amazonian Ecuador, related to abbreviata.
Recently described (1998) by Harry Luther, it is a denizen of primary
forests in mid-level, deeply shaded locations. The leaves are long and
lepidote, reddish below in mature plants and the inflorescence is
polystichous with red lepidote bracts and yellow to orange flowers. Large
seedlings, 2/3 grown, limited, |
||||
|
Aechmea ‘Ruby Sun’
A beautiful form of Ae. fasciata or ‘Silver Vase’
popular with florists. This clone has a compact form, wide leaves with
silver banding and a large inflorescence of light pink. Nice young plants,
about 1/3 mature, in 4in pots, |
||||
|
Aechmea veitchii A
showy but rare species from the region of Amazonia, covering parts of
Colombia to Peru. The plant has green leaves that are canaliculate or
channeled, forming an upright rosette. The inflorescence is spectacular,
strobilate or cone-shaped with many sharply recurved shiny bright red
bracts. Seedlings about 12in tall, limited, |
||||
|
Brocchinia reducta From
an obscure genus of bromeliads native to the Venezuelan 'Lost World'. Has
been discovered to be a carnivorous plant. The strictly upright tubular
growth forms a tight seal (when grown hard) that holds the tank full of
water into which enzymes have been secreted. The mouth of the tube is
narrow and the interior waxy to prevent the escape of any insect that may
fall in. Not bad looking either, with a glaucous gray-green tube of leaves
lightly striated with light green lines and whitish margins. Very rare in
cultivation. Grow moist in acidic soil. Sphagnum works well. 15 almost
mature plants on hand, |
||||
|
Guzmania dussii Native
to the island of Dominica, this medium sized species is fairly showy with
spiky pink bracts in a densely branched inflorescence. The flowers are
tubular, long and curved, suited to a hummingbird pollinator. A very rare
plant in cultivation. Beautiful seed grown plants about 2/3 mature,
limited supply, |
||||
|
Guzmania gracilior An
unusual rare species from Ecuador and Peru that grows to about 12in, with
an inflorescence 18in tall. The flowering spike is showy, red with mostly
unilateral short yellow branches. The leaves taper to a sharp tip. This
species is rather caulescent, like the familiar Vr. ospinae. An
intermediate to cool grower that does well in sphagnum moss or other moist
but aerated media. Limited number of nice 6in offsets, |
||||
|
Guzmania plumieri This
fairly spectacular and interesting species has a tall, branching
inflorescence with yellow flowers. Found in the Lesser Antilles where it
grows on the wet forested slopes of volcanic mountains. Very rare in
cultivation. Our good quality plants are robust seedlings with wide,
glossy green leaves, about 2/3 grown, limited, |
||||
|
Guzmania victoriae A
beautiful, medium sized species from northern Peru, where it lives in wet
forests at an altitude of 3000 to 4500 feet. It has a showy highly
branched red spike with distichously arranged branches, and red bracts and
large orange flowers. (See cover of BSI Journal, 1991 #1) This is the
first time we have had this species. Our plants are grown from seed and
are near mature, almost 24in tall. Limited supply. |

|
Hohenbergia
leopoldo-horstii A clone that
our late friend Wally Berg collected in Bahia, Brazil, A beauty with a
great shape, squat and open, and very compact. The light green leaves have
a dusting of dark brownish speckling. With proper culture this form grows
particularly compact and nice, being one of the most outstanding of the
smaller Hohenbergias. Seedlings produced from our stock, in 4in
pots, |
||||
|
Mezobromelia pleiosticha
‘Yellow’ A large and showy Guzmania-like
plant from a seldom-cultivated genus where spectacular inflorescences are
typical. This species has a tall scape with huge, recurving yellow scape
bracts all but hiding bright yellow branches. The more typical form is
bright red. This yellow form is found in the Caribbean. Seedlings about
8in tall, |
||||
|
Neomea ‘Santa Marta’
variegata A beautiful cross of
a Neoregelia and an Aechmea forms a medium sized (to 24in),
full rosette. Deep-green leaves have wide creamy-white margins that blush
pink with strong light. A short dark pink inflorescence has bright blue
flowers. A rare sport from our own stock. Half mature plants in |
