Vol 13 No 1 - March, 2003

Asarum splendens A decorative woodland plant that is sometimes referred to as Chinese Wild Ginger, though it is a member of the Aristolochiaceae, or Dutchman’s Pipe family. The plants have Cyclamen-like foliage that is very fragrant when crushed, rather heart-shaped, dark green, with abundant silvery mottling. The flowers are large and unusual, purple with white and greenish mottling. A rhizomatous species that appreciates good drainage, never-the-less makes a good terrarium plant because it tolerates low light levels. Nice young plant in 3in pots,

Guzmania lingulata ‘Mini’ Just as though it was tailor made for terrariums, a beautiful miniature. These little plants are very, very leafy and reach maturity at only 4 to 5in tall, and fit comfortably in a 2in pot! The foliage is bright green, and the inflorescence is a scape with a star shaped cluster of orange bracts. Ideal for a moist terrarium. Mature plants, in bud, $5.00 #5044

Nepenthes tobaica One of the tropical insectivorous plants. A beauty from northern Sumatra with yellow to red, slender, curving pitchers. This smaller species is a fast-growing vine that produces many pitchers. Can be grown in a hanging basket or on a trellis. Thrives in the terrarium environment, enjoying high humidity. Nice young plants with 8 to 12in spread.

Peperomia prostrata A neat little creeping species with little round shirt-button-sized leaves of deep green, with a pattern of silver blotches and clear ‘windows’. The inflorescences are toothpick-sized spikes of reddish-brown. A very graceful species that will cover any rough surface, it’s great for a hanging basket, a plaque or driftwood mount or for use in a terrarium. Nice plants established on cork mounts. Rare.

Scilla (Ledebouria) socialis This is a complex of fascinating little bulbous plants from South Africa, with very decorative foliage and cute blooms. Suited to dry shaded conditions, it can stand severe neglect and still reward you with showy foliage and blooms. There are more of these little plants around than there are names to go with them, and many variations (and perhaps species) exist in cultivation. Unfortunately, many are unidentified. We have three nice ones: Scilla socialis, with leopard spotted green leaves. Scilla socialis violacea, with mottled, discolor leaves, purple on the underside, and another, slightly smaller, with more delicate markings, probably a different species. Sold as a collection of three, full 4in pots. (see photo) All three, only
