A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO...
Jakarta, Indonesia, located on the teeming island of Java is just about as exotic a place as you might want to visit. A plant collecting journey to Java last summer gave me my first glimpse of the Indonesian lifestyle. Fortunately for me, I was staying with a friend who exposed me to the local customs by degree.

Sometimes, local foods in far away places are just a bit too exotic for my tastes. In Java I found the food good, for the most part, often sweet, based on seafood, and included a lot of really strange, but delicious fruits. I like seafood, but not three times a day, and only if I can recognize what phylum it belongs to. So when offered the opportunity to dine on fried chicken, my heart fairly leapt with joy! Here, at last, something familiar! To my dismay, the chicken was served fried, but poorly plucked, and with all parts, including feet and head intact. Of course, I didn’t eat those parts, but others with me did. Stripping the rubbery skin from the chicken feet between their teeth and popping the top of the chicken skull off and sucking out its little brain, looked worse than it sounds! At any rate, it turns out that this is not so unusual in Indonesia. In fact, an Australian acquaintance familiar with Indonesia told me that bags of fried chicken heads and feet are sold by many street vendors. And the local name for this exotic taste treat? Walkie-Talkies! |
